Best viewed in Chrome, however other modern web browsers should work.
This map tool allows you to view changes and issues relating to New Zealand's land cover, by exploring different versions and 'views' of the Landcover Database NZ. The 'Fly to examples' dropdown allows you to zoom to a few interesting areas where moderate to large amounts of change has taken place. The time controls can be used to limit between particular years / versions of LCDB.
- Area calculations are calculated using the current visible map extent.
- Landcover data is only visible at around 1:550k and below (1:270k on mobile devices). This is due to the fact that it is vector data that is being downloaded to the browser, to enable the fast calculation and updating of the chart. At smaller scales, the payload of this data becomes unmanageable.
- From Version 5.0, a new wetland indicator is present in the data and identifies wetlands in all their variety. It identifies wetlands whether or not it is obvious from the class name and enables the appearance and disappearance of wetlands to be captured over time. In the Landcover Explorer, you can view all wetlands by turning on the Wetlands Only switch.
